I would like to see the four candidates debate prison sentencing reform. Prisons are taking an increasing amount of our state budget that is then not able to be used for education, health care, etc. What must be done to lower prison costs?

One thing that can be done to reduce prison costs is to reduce prison sentences for non-violent crimes. An example is narcotics, which can be penalized more practically and cost-effectively through fines and probation. Another alternative is to look further into Huber for nonviolent crimes, to see if the inmate can more adequately fund their time in prison. And of course, initiatives such as Wisconsin Works, where people are taught to develop income-generating skills, rather than being dependent on state funds will allow them to build their lives not only economically but also socially and morally. People who work for what they have and have pride in their jobs are far less likely to commit felonies. On the other hand, those who have nothing to lose will lose nothing by committing a felony.
